Opening statement: I invite you to take part in this research study which is exploring the relationship between chronic stress anxiety, and sleep quality and how these may affect your dreaming patterns, and the main part of this research is to better help understand the correlation between all these factors. The answers obtained from this study could contribute to improving mental health interventions and help improve sleep management strategies for young adults.
Why have you asked me to take part? I have invited you to take part in this research as you are a student at Sheffield Hallam university and this research has a target audience of young adults, and I'm researching how chronic stress and anxiety affects their sleep quality and dreams and university students have a lot of stressors like academic pressure, social challenges and even personal challenges and that was an important fact in why I did this research and why I have asked you to take part. and you also fit the criteria. Since there is an exclusion criterion anyone who has a sleep disorder like insomnia isn't allowed to take part or people who have medication that affects anxiety or sleep, and pregnant women aren't allowed. Insomnia is excluded because it is a sleeping habit that makes you sleep less or have trouble staying asleep so if I had someone who had insomnia this would be a guarantee of the data saying they had bad sleep quality which I believe would skew the data as I want to have no habits or health conditions affecting the data.
Do I have to take part? No, you don't have to take part this is fully voluntary, and you are not obligated to take part or finish this research, and you can stop participating at any time even after we have started the questionnaire without having to say and you don't get a punishment/penalty. And your decision to participate or not will have no effect on your relationship with the university at all or anyone else.
What will I be required to do? All you will be required to do is answer some questions which are all very short questions which are mostly a rate on a scale type of question and that will be all.
Where will this take place? This will take place online using the online Qualtrics tool survey.
How often will I have to take part, and for how long? This is a one-time questionnaire that will last 20 minutes.
if deception is involved in the study. No deception will be involved in this study.
Are there any possible risks or disadvantaged in taking part. This will be asking questions about how stressed, anxious and how well you have been sleeping. Any of these questions could give a level of discomfort.
What are the possible benefits of taking part? You may gain an increased understanding of how stress affects your sleep patterns, and this can help with your everyday life making sure to minimize your stress to be able to get a higher quality of sleep and have less nightmares. Another is you can get feedback on sleep quality and stress levels, which is good for your health. Furthermore, you have contributed to research, which is a good one as it will make you feel like you have contributed to something helpful and good which you have.
When will I have the opportunity to discuss my participation? Straight after your participation you can ask any questions you want by emailing me.
Will anyone be able to connect me with what is recorded and reported? We take the protection of your data very serious at Sheffield Hallam university and all your data will be strictly kept confidential and will only be used for the purpose of my research your responses will be anonymous and that means no personally information like your name and student id will be linked to your survey responses and the way we will do that is by using a coding system in which each participant is assigned a unique identification number and that is what we will use to store your responses in our research database and no identifying information will be attached to your data.
Who will be responsible for all of the information when this study is over? When the study is over all raw data will be removed ensuring that no one can trace it back to the person so the data will fall into the university's hands.
Who will have access to it? Only the research team which is me will have access to the data and this will be on a secure database that is password protected.
What will happen to the information when this study is over? The information will be gathered together and kept for 10 years in compliance with the university and ethical guidelines this will be destroyed.
How will you use what you find out? I will be making a dissertation on the results of the research to answer the research question I have.
How long is the whole study likely to last? the study is likely to last 5 months from when it starts and will end in May.
How can I find out about the results of the study? Once the study is complete you can contact me and ask for the results.
