Research is being conducted at Sheffield Hallam University in partial fulfillment of a PhD thesis. This study has been designed to collect information on parents/caregivers beliefs and intentions to use gluten free casein free diets (GFCF) diets as complementary and/or alternative approaches for the treatment and/or management of symptoms of autism spectrum disorders. This study will also collect information on parents beliefs about the causes of autism. Complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) are treatments and medicines which fall outside mainstream health care. CAM treatments can be used alongside conventional medicine or as an alternative form. The National Centre for Complementary Medicine (NCCAM) suggest that treatments usually fall into two subgroups;natural products (e.g. dietary supplements, homeopathy) and mind and body approaches (e.g. acupuncture, massage, medication, relaxation, Tai Chi, yoga and hypnotherapy).
The results of this questionnaire will be used to investigate the factors which may influence parents/caregivers decisions to use GFCF diets as a treatment for their child who is on the autism spectrum.
